McIlroy and Johnson will play in Covid-19 charity skins game

first_imgGolf Rory McIlroy will lead golf’s return after a two-month hiatus in a televised charity match in Florida next week. The world number one will play with Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Woolfe in a $4m skins game on May 17 in aid of Covid-19 charities. With the backing of the PGA Tour this will be seen as a first tentative step since the coronavirus lockdown. There has been no professional golf since the Players Championship was abandoned after one round on March 12. The PGA Tour hope to resume their schedule on 11 June at the Colonial event in Fort Worth, Texas. The first four tournaments back are intended to be played behind closed doors. Next week’s Florida match will see the four players compete for money (skin) on each hole. If a pairing wins the hole, they win the skin. If the hole is halved, the skin carries over to the next hole. The event will also be played in the absence of spectators but will be screened live by NBC in the United States and on satellite television in the UK. Social distancing protocols will be observed and there will be coronavirus testing to protect those on site, including TV production crews. “It’s been difficult to witness what so many are enduring over the last several weeks due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said McIlroy, who is celebrating his 31st birthday on Monday and returned to the practice range last week. “I hope we can provide some respite and entertainment for those tuning in across the globe. Dustin and I will have a lot of fun together and our games will fit well as we push to raise funds and awareness.” Golf is pushing to be one of the first sports to return and this event will invigorate that drive. By financially benefitting pandemic relief efforts, public image concerns about sport being played at a time of global crisis might be somewhat eased. “We are excited by the safe and responsible return of live golf and the opportunity to raise significant funds for those on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said PGA commissioner Jay Monahan. “Fans around the world can look forward to a unique, interactive and entertaining event that will help those in need.” – BBClast_img read more

Rugby in crisis as unions engage in ‘unprecedented dialogue’

SUBSCRIBE TO US First Published: 2nd April, 2020 18:39 IST Associated Press Television News Written Bycenter_img COMMENT LIVE TV The U.S. has filed for bankruptcy. The Australians are facing a black hole of more than $70 million. English rugby leaders have drawn up worst-case scenarios of an even bigger financial hit.The coronavirus pandemic has left rugby on its knees over the last two weeks, with the prospect of more pain to come because of the uncertainty over whether leagues, lucrative tours and international competitions can resume or go ahead. The chief executive of England’s Rugby Football Union, the world’s richest union, said on Thursday there has been an “unprecedented amount of dialogue” between the sport’s leading countries during the outbreak that has shut down rugby.“The relationship between the north and the south has probably never been better,” Bill Sweeney said.Sweeney acknowledged that Australia might be in the weakest position of all the major unions. After returning a net loss of more than $5.4 million for last year, the Australian Rugby Union could take a hit of more than 10 times that figure this year if Super Rugby does not start up again and there are no domestic test matches for the Wallabies, according to CEO Raelene Castle. The ARU doesn’t even have a TV deal at present after refusing to take up an offer with Foxtel, its existing broadcaster. Foxtel had been bidding for rights with Optus, but negotiations have now been suspended.“It’s in no one’s interest,” Sweeney said, “for Australia to get into even more serious difficulties.”Sweeney suggested USA Rugby’s decision this week to file for bankruptcy was no surprise because the body was “struggling somewhat before the crisis,” through sponsorship pullback and losses from sevens competitions and test matches in the country in 2018.World Rugby, the sport’s governing body, is in conversations with the Americans to see how they can sustain the game in what it sees as a key future market.Sweeney last week said the RFU was bracing for lost revenue of up to 50 million pounds ($62 million) over the next 18 months. There will be a further blow to global revenues in July if test matches set to be hosted by New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Japan are called off because of the pandemic.A decision is set to be taken on those tours by the northern hemisphere sides at the end of April, but there is little optimism around given most countries are under lockdown, and could be for months.More realistic, at least among northern hemisphere countries, is ensuring the new season scheduled to start in September can proceed as planned.Wales and Scotland have already voided their domestic campaigns, as has England below the top-tier Premiership.“There is a final phase in our reaction to this crisis and it’s a reboot phase,” Sweeney said, “how we resurrect ourselves from this and emerge stronger.”A decision was made by the RFU on Thursday that final standings in English leagues should be determined by a “best playing record formula,” meaning that Newcastle Falcons will be promoted to the Premiership because they have a 100% record so far this season. The Falcons are set to replace Saracens, whose demotion because of breaches of salary cap regulations was confirmed in January. FOLLOW USlast_img read more

2022 FIFA World Cup: Two Co-Host Countries Set To Join Qatar

first_imgOman and Kuwait could host matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup if the competition in Qatar is expanded to 48 teams, a report has said.FIFA President Gianni Infantino has often spoken favourably about expanding the size of the event from 32 countries, but Qatar’s infrastructure would not be able to handle this increase.According to The New York Times, Oman and Kuwait are favoured to host games as they are not among the regional countries which have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar.A number of nations, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, have enforced a blockade on Qatar due to their alleged support for terrorism.Forty-eight teams have already been confirmed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted in North America by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.Since that was voted on in 2017, Infantino has repeatedly stressed that the change could be brought forward to 2022, while suggesting that other countries in the Middle East could host some matches.Infantino revealed FIFA would only proceed with the plan with the support of the host nation, however. He has claimed that most football associations support the idea to go up in size.A decision is expected to be made at the FIFA Congress in Paris in June, on the eve of the Women’s World Cup.Infantino is also standing unopposed for reelection as President in the French capital.Qatar are building eight stadiums for 2022.Critics have claimed a 48-team tournament is too large and could lead to a lower standard of football, with FIFA accused of being motivated by money.A 32-team World Cup also provides a neater and easier to understand route of progression throughout the event. Related2022 World Cup: FIFA Shelves Plans for 48-team TournamentMay 22, 2019In “FIFA”2022 FIFA World Cup: Coalition Urges FIFA To Consider Hosting Countries’ Human Rights RecordMarch 12, 2019In “FIFA”Xavi Tells FIFA To Ditch World Cup PlansMarch 19, 2019In “Europe”last_img read more appoints Sergey Glamazda as General Manager

Why RGIII will be better than ever in 2014

first_imgPhoto via: has emerged as the Redskins offensive and team leader this offseason. With a new coach in town Washington can hit the reset button after last year’s abysmal season. Griffin has set the tone for players this offseason, and that message has been clear from Griffin. After safety Ryan Clark signed with the team Griffin called him, congratulated him, and immediately told him: “Now let’s go to work.”This is exactly the type of attitude that the Redskins need throughout their locker room, and Griffin is setting the standard for the Redskins locker room this offseason. Leadership starts from the top, so when your franchise quarterback is the first one in the weight room and the last one out, teammates will follow his example. This is the best thing that could happen to the Redskins locker room. There are a lot of reasons to think Griffin will improve in 2014, but I think Griffin will be better than ever in 2014. Griffin will get an entire offseason to work with his receivers, something he has never had before. The importance of these offseason reps are often undervalued, and will help Griffin’s timing and accuracy in 2014.With a now fully recovered knee, Griffin will be more comfortable and mobile in 2014 cutting on his knee that will no longer feature the bulky brace he wore in 2013. Griffin should look like his rookie-of-the-year dynamic athletic self in 2014 now a year removed from surgery. Chris Cooley recently raved about Griffin’s mobility, saying that he looked like a different player than he was last year. Cooley went on to say watching Griffin all he could do is think “You’re an absolute freak” (talking about Griffin’s athletic ability).Cooley isn’t the only one raving about the third-year quarterback. Quarterback guru Terry Shae was recently quoted saying Griffin “looked 100% healthy.” Shae went on to comment on Griffin’s improved footwork and release-point, which will improve Griffin’s accuracy in 2014.Griffin over-achieved in 2012. He and Alfred Morris made an average at best Redskins offense that lacked playmakers outside of the rookie duo look explosive. With two years of NFL experience now under his belt, a better offense including a plethora of weapons around him, expect a healthy RGIII to explode in 2014.All signs are pointing to Griffin returning to his 2012 form. Just that fact alone will make Griffin dangerous in 2014. However, when you pair that with a quarterback friendly coach, a full offseason of work, and a drastically improved offense defensive coordinators should start game-planning on how to stop Griffin now, because it’s not going to be easy. Expect Griffin’s mobility, accuracy, and overall play to be better than ever in 2014.Please follow and like us:last_img read more
